Media Bias and Misinformation in Transgender News Coverage

Fact-checking the press: The real-world consequences of inaccurate transgender reporting.

On 22 August 2026, the Scottish Daily Express published an article with the headline “John Swinney warned by human rights watchdog over attempt to break the law by bringing back gender self-ID“, written by David Walker.

Mr Walker has an established record of writing articles hostile to the trans community.

On 24 August, we filed a formal complaint with the Independent Press Standards Organisation, detailing three grave concerns.

1) Misleading Headline Unsupported by Text.

2) Factual Inaccuracy Regarding Legal Protections.

3) Failure to Distinguish Comment and Conjecture from Fact.

We can confirm that as of yesterday (7 September 2026), the Scottish Daily Express was compelled to correct its reporting in response to our complaint about factual inaccuracy regarding legal protections.

We are still pursuing our complaints regarding the issues of a misleading headline unsupported by text and a failure to distinguish comment and conjecture from fact.

In the last two weeks alone, TransLucent has submitted five complaints to IPSO over inaccurate reporting; two remain under review, while two have already advanced to the next stage of IPSO’s complaints procedure.

TransLucent will relentlessly challenge inaccurate reporting and urges all journalists to rigorously scrutinise claims from gender-critical organisations presented as “factual” or “the law” when, in reality, they are demonstrably false.
