This Briefing Note outlines that while the Equality Act 2010 protects the right to hold gender-critical beliefs, the expression of these beliefs is not protected if it results in detriment or harassment towards transgender individuals, who are also protected under the Act due to their protected characteristic of gender reassignment. Briefing Notes For MPs and Media
TransLucent briefing notes are produced for MPs and journalists alike, giving basic details of human rights issues facing the trans community, probably the most marginalised, vulnerable and attacked demographic in British society today.
Victims of far-right, “gender-critical” organisations with seemingly unlimited funds (often from evangelical sources), a culture war against the trans community, which started in 2017, see no signs of abating.
The UK trans community consists of approximately 250,000 people, roughly the same size as the Jewish community. Approximately 50,000 people identify as trans women, with a similar number identifying as trans men, the residue often being non-binary.
Many trans people have mental health issues, often because of difficulty in getting a job (one in three employers admit they are sceptical about employing a trans person) and the delay in getting gender-affirming healthcare via the NHS, which on average is around eight years.

The briefing note discusses the “Culture War” or “Gender-War” against the transgender community in the UK, emphasising the ‘Splitting the T from the LGB’ campaign and significant financial support that is used to argue against trans rights. This culture war affects trans people through single-sex spaces, sports, prisons, healthcare, and increased hate crimes.

Gender Exploratory Therapy (GET) – Conversion Therapy explores the reasoning behind a patient’s gender dysphoria, but there are concerns that it is a conversion therapy technique that can inflict harm on trans youth by tying dysphoria to trauma, delaying access to gender-affirming care and lacking an estimated duration for the therapy.

Misinformation about transgender healthcare, often originating from US-based organisations, is being spread globally, targeting gender-affirming healthcare, and puberty blockers. This misinformation relies on false claims about the risks of puberty blockers, the alleged widespread regret of transitioning individuals (contradicted by a 95%-98% satisfaction rate), and the unfounded concept of Rapid Onset Gender Dysphoria (ROGD) purported to be a social contagion.
