At Translucent, our mission is to advocate for and promote the UK’s transgender and gender-diverse community to advance visibility, social acceptance, legal recognition and improve healthcare. As part of this, we’ve reviewed articles concerning trans healthcare in order to:
- Highlight the dismal state of trans healthcare in the UK, including long waiting times and the fact that the UK has the worst access to healthcare in Europe for transgender people.
- Monitor the activities of the NHS and work with them to improve access to, and provision of, trans healthcare.
- Investigate issues within Gender Identity Clinics (GICs), including long waiting lists and the fact that NHS England has never recorded how many trans patients are waiting for care.
- Provide information on developing effective models for health services needed to support trans adults before, during, and after being seen by NHS-commissioned specialist gender identity services.
- Address the pathologisation of transgender identities within healthcare.
- Challenge the notion that trans healthcare is a mental health issue.
- Monitor public bodies that have become oppositional and damaging to the trans community.
- Address misinformation and disinformation regarding transgender lives, experiences, rights and healthcare, as well as investigate organisations and groups hostile to the trans community.
- Expose the cisgender bias inherent in reviews such as the Cass Review and the NHS’s new interim service specification.
