At Translucent, we are committed to combating hate crimes against the UK’s transgender and gender-diverse community to advance visibility, social acceptance, legal recognition and improve healthcare. As part of this, we’ve written articles concerning hate crime in order to:
- Highlight the increase in hate crimes: Our articles present data and statistics showing the rise in hate crimes against trans people.
- Expose the role of media and public figures: We analyse how newspapers, right-wing media, and certain individuals contribute to transphobia and, consequently, the rise in hate crimes.
- Monitor and challenge trans-hostile organisations: Our articles scrutinise organisations that promote trans-hostile narratives and talking points.
- Investigate the EHRC: We examine the actions of the Equality and Human Rights Commission (EHRC) and call out potential collusion with trans-hostile groups.
- Advocate for comprehensive hate crime legislation: We support the implementation of comprehensive hate crime laws that include specific protections for trans people.
- Provide resources for reporting hate crimes: Our articles offer information and links to organisations and resources where individuals can report hate crimes.
- Define and explain transgender hate crime: We clarify what constitutes a transgender hate crime, including incidents motivated by hostility towards transgender individuals or the transgender community.
- Promote solidarity and collective action: Our articles emphasise the importance of solidarity and collective action across different communities to combat transphobia and hate crimes.
- Challenge the notion that hate crime is imagined: We address and refute claims that the increase in hate crime is exaggerated or not as severe as it is.
- Highlight the impact of hate on the community: Our articles highlight the real-world consequences of hate speech and hate crimes, including violence and the risk to people’s lives.
- Expose the cisgender bias that may occur within reviews such as the Cass Review.
