Every third day, in our #EveryThreeDays campaign, I write about a woman killed by a man. Previously in this campaign, which started on May 2nd 2021, we have remembered 71 women, the last being trans woman Rita Hester.
Today we remember Barbara Baraniecka, 43, who Cezary Sobiewski murdered after Barbara dumped him. Sobiewski had a history of drunkenness, and Barbara told him four weeks earlier that their relationship was over, but he was not prepared to accept her decision.
Things came to a head in November 2015 with Sobiewski becoming violent, repeatedly knifing the mother-of-two in the neck, then leaving her dead body in the bedroom whilst carrying on drinking. After a few hours, Barbara’s daughter, Dzesika came home, discovering her limp body in the bedroom while Sobiewski sat quietly downstairs drunk.
Fearing he would attack her, she ran from the house and a neighbour called 999. Sobiewski was arrested immediately and pleaded guilty at his trial and was sentenced to life in prison.
In a statement, Dzesika said:
“My mum was everything to me and my sister. We have lost mommy, friend and our world’s guardian. It is so hard to live without her, our whole life is upside down now and we live with sadness day by day. We loved her so much and we miss her. We do not see anything positive in our future.”
