In the beginning, God created Trans?
“God created Adam and Eve – NOT Adam and Steve”!
You may have heard that said as a common reason that being anything other than cisgender and heterosexual is inherently wrong – because… well – “because GOD”.
Thankfully it’s not widely believed – although some Christians still won’t budge on the “man was meant to be with woman and anything else is deviant behaviour”. Sadly, recent comments made by the Pope once again show that this bigotry still exists.
It’s an insult to so many good Christian people out there who find this abhorrent, and equally, for anyone to assume that all Christian people hold this view is quite frankly insulting. So I want it made clear here and now that what I’ve written here excludes these good people in my challenging remarks, and I’d like anyone reading this to be mindful of that.
Okay?
Marvellous.
So… Adam and Eve.
A straight couple. Sorted.
But I want to focus here on trans people now… about how identifying as trans “goes against God”, and that by validating anyone trans, it means admitting that God does make mistakes which in itself, many people feel is a blasphemy.
A primary argument against the “doesn’t make mistakes” belief, and I mean this genuinely and without resorting to sarcasm or antagonism forgets about Noah’s Ark.
Genesis 7 1 The LORD then said to Noah, “Go into the ark, you and your whole family, because I have found you righteous in this generation.
2 Take with you seven of every kind of clean animal, a male and its mate, and two of every kind of unclean animal, a male and its mate,
3 and also seven of every kind of bird, male and female, to keep their various kinds alive throughout the earth.
4 Seven days from now I will send rain on the earth for forty days and forty nights, and I will wipe from the face of the earth every living creature I have made”.
So, basically, God did a ‘factory reset’ on our planet… corrected an error: therefore, God does make mistakes.
Trans people are NOT a mistake, but we need support in order to actualise who we are and be fully validated, be it through acknowledging pronouns, psychological and medical support, social acceptance etc. etc. we strive to achieve what most people already have – a right to exist and be respected.
I’ve digressed here, so let’s get back to Adam and Eve.
So Adam came first. Man. Or is that actually correct?
Two sources I’ve used here for information – The Torah and The Bible.
First from The Torah. Genesis: Chapter 1: [1:27] And God created man in His image; in the image of God He created him; male and female He created them”
And from The Bible. Genesis: Chapter 1: [1:27] So God created humankind in his image, in the image of God he created them; male and female he created them.
Now think about that for a minute.
The first addresses Adam as ‘man’ and ‘him’, the second is not gender specific referring to ‘humankind’ – but both then refer to the first human as ‘them’.
A suggestion of a gender-fluid or intersex being?
And the use of ‘them’ as a pronoun is again a good argument for non-binary people who identify as ‘they’ and ‘them’ instead of saying using a gender binary term is a ‘new thing’ or a fad.
Rabbi Mark Sameth explained this in his article ‘Was Adam a Hermaphrodite?’ (2016) and although we use the term intersex instead of hetmaphrodite now, this is definitely worth reading:
“Genesis 1:27 refers to Adam as “it” (oto, singular) and “them” (otam, plural) in the same sentence; male and female, created in the image of God.
The Rabbis understood this to mean that Adam was created as an intersexed being, a hermaphrodite; singular in one respect, plural in another.
Precisely how Adam was constituted as an intersexed being was debated. Rabbi Jeremiah ben Elazar held that Adam was an androgyne, while Rabbi Samuel bar Nachman held that Adam was more like conjoined male/female twins.
Here is the passage from Bereishit Rabba 8:1: … Said R’ Yirmiyah ben Elazar: In the hour when the Holy One created the first human, He androgynousm [as] an androgyne/androginos, as it is said, “male and female.
He created them”. Said R’ Shmuel bar Nachmani: In the hour when the Holy One created the first human. He created [for] him a double-face/di-prosopon/du-par’tsufin, and sawed him and made him backs, a back here and a back [t]here, as it is said, “Back/achor and before/qedem You formed me” [Psalm 139:5].”
So one could say not only was the first human intersex – so was God – having created a being in His image, or more accurately in Their image.
That’s definitely something to think about… but what about Eve, and why do I think Eve could very well be the first trans woman?
Well, bigoted people will always throw biology into the argument, without having appropriate knowledge of the subject, they’ll comment about ‘DNA’ and refuse to budge saying that man = man and woman = woman and that won’t ever change.
For a moment, let’s just go with that and get ready for the whole thing to be turned on it’s head. Again in Genesis (both versions) God created man from dust… is this another being?
Who knows, but get this. This was Adam. Man. And as to Woman?
The Torah: [2:21] And the Lord God caused a deep sleep to fall upon man, and he slept, and He took one of his sides, and He closed the flesh in its place. [2:22] And the Lord God built the side that He had taken from man into a woman, and He brought her to man. [2:23] And man said, “This time, it is bone of my bones and flesh of my flesh.
This one shall be called ishah (woman) because this one was taken from ish (man).”
And The Bible: [2:21] So the LORD God caused a deep sleep to fall upon the man, and he slept; then he took one of his ribs and closed up its place with flesh. [2:22] And the rib that the LORD God had taken from the man he made into a woman and brought her to the man. [2:23] Then the man said, “This at last is bone of my bones and flesh of my flesh; this one shall be called Woman, for out of Man this one was taken.”
So whether or not it was Adam’s ‘side’ or his rib, what we have there is a female made from part of a male body. And the whole “you can’t change your DNA” argument crumbles now because using the old “I’ve read a book and… because SCIENCE” will no longer work… male became female… female characteristics were validated, but male biological factors have to be taken into consideration.
Sorry bigots, but PLEASE don’t use religious texts to try to win an argument, because purely going off logic here, I’ve just given proof that Eve WAS trans.
And I’ve done it correctly and rationally rather than just repeated “well I’m right because it is what it is”, involving the views of other equally ignorant people.
Challenging views is one thing, but challenging the rights of trans people like myself to even exist is offensive.
I don’t need to prove who I am in order to be valid, nor does ANYONE trans, but I’ve chosen here to provide PROOF for those who choose to use religion to win their argument.
And I’m sorry [not sorry] – argument lost.
At the end of the day surely we should all just focus on being HUMAN and accept one another – but sadly we’ve not quite got there yet.
But it doesn’t mean we should give up on it… I’ve learned to accept who I am, other people I know accept me and validate me… and that’s all ANYONE trans really wants.
And if you’ve an issue with that?
Take it up with God. x
