At Translucent, we champion the human rights of the UK’s transgender and gender-diverse community to advance visibility, social acceptance, legal recognition and improve healthcare. As part of this, we’ve written articles concerning human rights in order to:
- Affirm trans rights as human rights.
- Monitor and expose human rights abuses: We investigate and report on instances where the human rights of transgender individuals are being violated or ignored.
- Counteract misinformation: Our articles directly address misinformation and disinformation about trans lives, experiences, rights, and healthcare.
- Investigate hostile organisations: We scrutinise organisations and groups that demonstrate hostility towards the trans community and its existence.
- Advocate for legal recognition and policy changes: We support reforms to laws and policies, such as the Gender Recognition Act (GRA), to better protect and uphold the human rights of transgender people.
- Challenge discrimination: We challenge discrimination against transgender people in various areas, including healthcare, employment, and access to services.
- Address the impact of “culture wars”: We analyse how “culture war” tactics erode civil rights and lead to increased criminalisation and punishment for those who claim them.
- Promote inclusivity: We advocate for inclusive practices and policies that ensure transgender individuals can fully enjoy their human rights.
- Call out transphobia: We confront instances of transphobia and discrimination, including those that may occur within feminist spaces or other movements.
- Assess the EHRC: We assess and critique the actions of the Equality and Human Rights Commission (EHRC), particularly regarding its role in protecting trans rights.
- Promote solidarity: Our articles emphasise the importance of solidarity and collective action across different communities to support trans rights and combat discrimination.
