International Solidarity: Matching Fund Boosts Legal Fight for Trans Rights in the UK
TransLucent is deeply grateful to everyone who has supported our legal challenge to the EHRC’s Code of Practice so far. After just seven days of crowdfunding, our community and allies have already donated over £26,000, enabling us to move to the next phase of this work.
New matching fund: every pound doubled
We are pleased to announce that a Canadian supporter has offered to match every pound donated to TransLucent during the week commencing 13 July 2026, up to a maximum of £5,000. For this week only, every £1 you give will become £2 for our campaign. A £10 donation will generate £20 in support; £50 will become £100; and if we reach the full £5,000 in new donations, our Canadian benefactor will contribute an additional £5,000 to our fund.
This matching pledge is a strong expression of international solidarity. It reflects a growing recognition that what is happening to trans and gender-diverse people in the UK is part of a wider human rights crisis that concerns our global community. In their message to TransLucent, this wonderful benefactor said:
“As a Canadian trans ally and strong supporter ot trans rights, I am aghast at the situation of trans people in the UK and pleased to support TransLucent’s challenge of the EHRC Code of Practice via Judicial Review. I want everyone to know that Canadians are seeing what is happening to your human rights and stand with you at this truly shocking time”

Why this support matters now
On 30 June 2026, four transgender advocacy organisations issued an urgent travel advisory warning. The advisory notes that the UK now sits among the lowest‑ranked states in Europe for legal recognition of gender, alongside Bulgaria, Georgia, Hungary, Russia and Slovakia, and that the Lemkin Institute has issued a second red flag warning of the social genocide of trans people.
These warnings echo what TransLucent has been documenting: a sustained erosion of rights, protections, and dignity for trans and gender‑diverse people in the UK.
Our legal challenge to the EHRC’s Code of Practice is one crucial element of that work.
The Code, developed in the wake of the Supreme Court’s ruling on the definition of sex under the Equality Act, threatens to deepen exclusion from single‑sex spaces, increase discrimination in services and workplaces, and further normalise policies that treat trans people as “others”.
Why your support is vital
Judicial review is resource‑intensive, and we are up against a well‑resourced state apparatus that has chosen to side with exclusion over equality. The funds you have already given have allowed us to initiate our legal challenge. The matching fund announced today will help us:
- Cover the next stages of litigation, including key procedural steps and expert evidence.
- Strengthen our capacity to respond quickly to further regressive changes in law and policy.
- Amplify the voices of those most affected.

Call to action
If you are able to give, please do so now. Between 13 and 19 July 2026, our Canadian benefactor will match your contribution pound for pound, up to £5,000. Your solidarity today helps us confront the legal architecture of exclusion. We want to thank our Canadian supporter for this act of international solidarity. Trans rights are human rights.
