J. K. Rowling – her tweet dated 20th February 2024 and the report that she has donated £70,000 to For Women Scotland
Statement: J. K. Rowling
TransLucent. Org advocates for the trans and gender-diverse community in the UK won LGBT Organisation of the Year (National Diversity Awards 2022) and has been described by the Equality and Human Rights Commission as a “key stakeholder” for trans human rights.
We are aware of a tweet, dated Feb 20th 2024, from J K Rowling, which in our opinion, suggests that trans advocacy organisations such as ourselves (often described by trans-hostile actors as “trans activists”) may advocate for male sex offenders and those who harm women to be incarcerated in the female estate.
We wish to clarify that our CEO made it abundantly clear on national radio in February 2023 that this is not our position.
Further, we wish to point out that all demographics, including women, have convicted offenders who have harmed others, which include Lucy Letby, Rose West, Myra Hindley and Scarlett Jenkinson, who murdered trans schoolgirl Brianna Ghey.
We have always advocated that whenever a violent sex offender is convicted, no matter who they are, they should never be housed with vulnerable women.
We are also aware of reports that Ms Rowling has donated £70,000 to support a legal case, which, if successful, will roll back the human rights of trans people.
If true, we are disappointed that such a high-profile individual donates such a considerable amount of money to make the lives of an already vulnerable demographic of people even more difficult than it already is.
