A Dedicated Advocate: Thanking Steph Richards and Looking to the Future
Following her resignation as our CEO earlier today, TransLucent extends its heartfelt thanks to Steph Richards, whose leadership has been instrumental in advancing our organisation and championing trans human rights.
We understand Steph’s decision to pursue her personal legal case against the Labour Party, which ultimately led to her resignation, and we are deeply saddened to see her go from this position. Steph will remain a leading figure in her field of human and women’s rights and as a strong trans rights advocate.
TransLucent are proud to announce our new Joint Interim CEOs:
Prof Stephen Whittle, OBE, is a leading figure in the development of human rights law for trans people. As a co-founder of Press for Change, he played a pivotal role in securing legal recognition for trans people in the UK. Stephen brings a wealth of professional legal expertise to TransLucent.
Dr Debora Diamond, our former Director of Advocacy, is a Consultant Psychologist with extensive NHS experience. Debora’s skills and leadership in improving mental health services have been invaluable in raising awareness of the challenges currently facing trans people in the public and political spheres.
The past few years – and especially the past year, following the Supreme Court decision in For Women Scotland and the unnecessary way it is being interpreted and applied by some organisations – are devastating for trans people, their supporters, allies, and loved ones.
Trans people of all ages are being effectively barred from public life, outed by data policies, denied healthcare, denied essential legal protections, portrayed cruelly as threats to others’ safety, and demonised in both social and mainstream media.
TransLucent remains committed to campaigning for the recognition and restoration of trans people’s fundamental human right to a meaningful place in society, and to be treated with the dignity and respect afforded to all citizens. These words are so often heard, but now more than ever need to be adhered to.
TransLucent welcomes Stephen and Debora into their new roles as Joint CEOs as we confront the many challenges ahead.
We are confident their dedicated and forthright leadership will help us forge new and greater opportunities in the months and years ahead.
Trans women are women. Trans men are men. Non-binary identities are valid
